What is smudging and where does it come from?

Smudging with white sage is known as a cleansing ritual of the Native Americans (Indians). Presumably the use is even older and goes back to prehistoric times. Smudging is the burning of specific herbs to expel evil spirits and energies. It is now popular worldwide to cleanse the living environment from negativity. Many people burn white sage in their homes for this and open the windows wide to expel the bad atmosphere.

White sage smudge; properties.

White sage is native to California. The fragrance is very intense and spicy. It is the best known spice used to perform smudging. The old story behind this is that evil spirits cannot tolerate white sage. For example, they could be chased away by burning white sage sprigs.

Burn white sage; how

This bunch of smudge herbs has white sage as a base, in combination with cinnamon. The scent of white sage is strong. According to the ancient traditions of the Indians, smudging requires the four elements: earth, water, wind (air) and fire. Hereby the herbs represent the element earth, a large shell for the element water, the combustion is the fire and the smoke is the element "air". You proceed as follows with smudging:

  • Open as many windows and doors as possible
  • Place the sage stick on a shell or dish
  • Light the smudging stick until you see a flame.
  • Blow out the flame so that the herbs smolder.
  • Spread the smoke from the herbs carefully, for example with a feather.
